I went down to the Hawaii theater in Chinatown Honolulu last night to see my mate Eddie do his solo show at the fabulous Hawaii theater. A classic old-school theater, built perhaps as much as a hundred years ago, this was the best place that you could see someone like Eddie play acoustically. It was a very intimate atmosphere and Eddie often chatted to the crowd between songs, recounting moments from his life. He was backed up by New Zealand up and comer Liam Finn, son of Neil Finn from Crowded house, along with Elisia J Barnes, the daughter of Aussie Rock legend Jimmy Barnes.
For me, already a fan of Neil Finn’s, It’s not hard to tell that Liam is his son as he sounds so much like his dad. Liam is a multi talented musician. He would start many songs on one instrument, only to finish them on another. Start on the guitar here and end with a smashing drum solo there, and so on. The crowd was really getting behind him. Towards the later half of Eddie’s set, Liam and EJ joined him for a few final songs before disappearing, only to have Eddie reappear for one of the longest Encore’s I’ve ever seen. Eddie would just keeping coming up with new songs, one after another. Even when he finally did disappear, we had to rush back into the theatre for yet another encore which really brought the house down. Eddie even invited up a couple of his local muso friends and did a stirring rendition of Hawaii 78. A fabulous show indeed! If you are in Hawaii and reading this, wishing you’d made it down to the show, fret not as Eddie has a 2nd show tonight (2nd of July). Tickets are about $75 and well worth it. Sorry that I didn’t get any better pic’s, but I had to be pretty stealthy, just to get the one concert shot here, right at the end of the show. I was risking the wrath of a very angry looking security dude, who was shouting at people a lot. Thanks Eddie. That was a fantastic show mate. Cheers
This show was amazing on all counts. Wish I had of made it. Eddie is awesome!
Tavana was the local muso that sang Hawaii 78. Also a fab muso.
So great you went and snuck one shot off…security are strict when it comes to snapping Ed.
