Reef Hawaii’an Pro finals day
I dropped in to Ali’i beach park this morning to take in a few hours of the Reef Pro and was not disappointed. Some great surfing going on there when the swell was happening. A few heats were wave starved as is often the case. but when it pumped, it pumped. Although not from the desirable swell direction of the west, this predominately north swell produced very testing conditions for all competitors and those who rose to the top were pretty much the top guys on the day. I bailed after a few hours and watched the rest of it from home. Joel Parkinson was one of the in form surfers but was dispensed with by unsponsored wonder Hank Gaskell. I say wonder because everyone wonders why he isn’t sponsored. The guy could barely do any wrong today. Today though day was Joel Centeio’s. The 26 year old Haleiwa local lives just across the road from this very surf break and has always done well in difficult waves like Haleiwa and Sunset. He has an excellent record at Sunset, so he must be looking to be in the drivers seat with the Van’s triple crown. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy either. Like Jason Shibata, Joel can also be considered a true ambassador of aloha. Good on ya Joel. everyone’s stoked for you.
