I’ve been looking a lot further afield than my normal shooting locatons, looking for fresh new locations to shoot and I’ve been finding a couple lately. Take this morning for example. I got up in the dark, grabbed a cup o’ coffee and headed down the coast. The place that I was hoping to shoot wasn’t really doing it for me and purely as a last minute afterthought, I took a turn that led me to a beach that I’d never been before. And it was such a beautiful beach
with lush greenery along it’s shores and the most sparkling clean and green water, I’ve seen in some time. I was really looking for a cool sunrise image first and foremost, but I saw just a twinkle of potential in the ocean waves there and so took to the water for hopefully some
inside the tube views. I wasn’t disappointed at all. It turned out to be one cool new location that is certain to be revisited again and soon. Enjoy…..

More Amazing panoramic scenes from Hawaii

Folks, I’ve really, really been getting back into landscape photography over the past couple of years and have especially taken to shooting panoramic scenes. The past couple of weeks has been a pretty beautiful time here on the north shore and I’ve been shooting a lot of really cool beach pictures and
coastal images.

I thought I’d showcase some of my most recent panoramas here for you to enjoy. A lot of folks come here to surf north shore, but a lot more come to enjoy the beautiful ocean waves and big wave surfing as well as the world famous Hawaiian sunsets that we get here every evening. There’s even pictures in here of the full moon setting over the surf at Pipeline and Sharks Cove.

The Great Ocean Road was better than great.

I just returned from a 10 day photo trip to Victoria and Tasmania, both southern states of Australia. I managed to shoot a lot of great panoramic landscapes while I was there, despite sometimes less than favorable weather conditions. The Great Ocean Road was a great example of this. We rocked up Gibson Steps, just 1 moment before the sun departed for the remainder of the day. Luckily, it was a visually dramatic departure. The following morning however was simply astounding. Awakening in the dark, I could see the stars above, but by the time sunrise came, it had clouded back over. That was a bummer, because I was hoping for at least a glimpse of the sun. I could see that any chance of a sunrise was not going to happen at Gibson Steps, itself due to the odd angle that sun rises over the land at that particular location, so we went down the road to the next lookout at the 12 Apostles and as we approached the viewpoint, the rising sun burst out of the cloud in a totally gothic (god like) fashion and just for 30 seconds time period. Meanwhile, while I’m shooting this incredible scene, the winds are blowing 40-50 knots. It took every bit of skill that I could muster to make this picture happen. Of course, I nailed the picture. It turned out to be one of THE quintessential images of this trip for sure.(see the 1st image) We cruised back over to Gibson Steps and were amazed to see a guy standing there on his own in the early morning light with no vehicle nearby. It turned out that he was a tourist from Italy and had been camping on the beach below and a wave had swept into his tent. The surf by the way was huge! He was lucky to only get wet. Flashback to 2001 and Kieren Perrow at Shipsterns

It was the year 2001 and I had led a band of surfers into a very remote and difficult to access surf location, deep in the Tasmanian wilderness. The place was still largely unknown about, but things changed after Kieren Perrow, Drew Courtney and Mark Mathews paddled out there. 2 Crazy sessions ensued over the 2 days that we were there. Both were milestone sessions with
enourmous waves of consequence being photographed for the first time. Kieren in particular put on an epic performance which catapaulted him onto the world stage. Fast forward 10 and a bit years and we see Kieren Perrow winning one of the heaviest contests around. The Pipemasters in dangerous
8-15 foot surf.

A birds eye view of the famed reef at Pipeline

Ever wondered what the reef looks like that it causes the water to propel itself upwards and outward, forming the world famous surf break that we all know as Pipeline? Wonder no more. Here in this
ariel perspective, the business end of the surf reef is clearly visible in the middle of the first frame. The reef sits at a slight angle, producing world class barrels, often in the 2 figure range. So take a good look at the reef there in image one, then check out the surfer in image 2, also called Reef (McIntosh), standing inside an absolutely perfect wave. This is THE reason that so many people want to surf pipeline. Enjoy…

The long wait

It is now November the 18th which is well and truly inside of the normal window for big surf in Hawaii.
Typically at this time of the year, you’d be looking at 10 feet plus of raw ocean swell, but this year, it has struggled so far to get beyond a couple of feet. The Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa beach park has been on hold since day one and may not even run with the way things are heading. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of out-of-towners all here right now for the surf contest season and most of them have not even managed to get a decent surf in yet. Word is peeps are getting stir crazy along the north shore, with no waves on offer. Parties must be going into overdrive every night for sure. Worse still is that the experts see no signs of improvement in the near future. Kind of makes me stoked to be leaving for Oz

soon.

Davey’s Oceans Wave Sculptures – DVD

Friends, I have just released a new DVD featuring hundreds of my best images of
Ocean waves or as I like to call them ocean wave sculptures

Way back in 1977, I squeezed off my first photograph which in itself was an ocean wave. Since then, I’ve photographed perhaps hundreds’s of thousands of images, but I’ve always continued to photograph the ocean waves. I’ve had numerous people ask me over the years to produce a DVD of my images and after someone again asked me recently, I decided to go for it. This DVD features 4 music tracks by Australian musician; Red Whyte played against a never ending array of amazing wave images from all over the world. I used to wish I could have stood on the beach and seen the legendary surf sessions that happened at Off The Wall, back in the late 70′s with legends like Gerry Lopez, Mark Richards, Shaun Thompson, Buttons and more.
Of course, had I actually been there, I’d be another 10 years older most likely, so I’m happy with the status quo. After all, I’ve been lucky enough to bear witness to Kelly Slater‘s entire amazing career on the world tour.

I first photographed as a teenager in 1992 after he just won the very prestigious pro junior event at Narrabeen, in Sydney, Australia. The first non Australian to do so actually. He went on to win the world title in 1993 and just yesterday, he added world title No 11 to his tally. Now almost 20 years later, he’s lost the hair, but his will to win continues to make him a strong presence on the world surfing tour. I’ve seen Kelly surf at a multitude of places over the years and he just about always seems to blow minds. It’s uncanny how good he really is, not to mention, his knowledge of surfboard design. This man is undoubtably one of the greatest athletes of all time. As for next year, I think the lure of a tidy dozen might bring Kelly back for another tour around the planet. Speaking of dozen’s, here are a dozen of my favorite pictures of Kelly from over the years.

I’m opening my knowledge to those who wish to better their skills or just learn some cool new photographic techniques. I’m a veteran of the surf world which just also happens to be one of the most innovative areas in the photography scene. During my time as a magazine photographer, I have secured more than 140 magazine covers from all over the world. Actual number of published images, I could not tell you. I’ve seen a lot of innovation over the years and I’ve got quite a few tricks up my own sleeve that so far remain my own. I’ve always loved the idea of doing something a little different. I live on the north shore, the most photographed the surf zone on the planet. You need to be innovative to be able to dish up images that thrill magazine editors and photo buyers alike. The one thing that they always love are the images that no one else has. This takes the willingness to throw away perfectly good imageopportunities, in the quest of producing truly individual pictures. Actually going out of your way to ensure that your images will be unique beyond others. It could be the simple use of a neutral density filter over the sky, or a massively slow shutter speed. There are all kinds of ways to produce strikingly original imagery. Every day here is different and with each day the options change. Luckily, there are many different ways that I go about photographing, each relying on a different set of weather and/or ocean conditions. My classes are deliberately small and personal, to ensure a high level of skill is actually passed on to each participant. The added advantage also for having such small groups is that I can personalize my lessons to the individual, so if for example, you wanted to learn specifically about a certain type of shooting or approach, we can just zero straight in on that. If however, you’ve come to learn fresh new approaches to your photography, you’ll also walk away, well armed with renewed enthusiasm and a whole fresh perspective of photography

New Surf City – canvas series

Folks, I’ve always imagined well known cities with
surf in them. Of course most don’t have and we hardly ever see images of any except for the very occasional image of Honolulu or Rio. I set out to see what some of these places would look like with surf so with the help of Photoshop, I’ve been able to bring a handful to fruition so far. Zach over at theinertia.com happened to see my Honolulu Tsunami image recently and enquired about my city scapes. He was so impressed, he wanted to run a pictorial on them and he kept asking. About every 3 weeks, another email would drop into the inbox, once again enquiring if I had a pictorial ready yet. Finally I got an edit over to him last week and it just went live at theinertia.com. My surf-city-scapes include the opera house in Sydney, Honolulu city, the derwent bridge in Hobart, the golden gate at San Francisco, even the beautiful city of Seattle didn’t escape my surf city makeover. Last but certainly not least is my tribute to surfing in New York City which I entitled Liberty Surf

More vintage surf gold from the early 80′s Tasmanian surf scene

The Aussie website: the collective has been featuring an ongoing series of pictorials of my pictures from surfingTasmania in the the early 80′s. What you could actually now call vintage surf. For those reading and remember, this latest instalment features classic Tasmanian surf breaks such as The wedge, Roaring beach, The points, Middle Bay, Lighthouse and EagleHawk Neck. Some memorable surfers featured in this instalment are Alan Davis, Bernard Burridge, Brian and Scotty, Buzzard, Chris Boling, Maurice Ransom, Herman Tyson, Dieter Kohlmeyer and Mick Moorehead, to name several of ‘em. It’s always been a pretty thriving surf scene in Tasmania for as long as I can remember. It’s a great place to be a surfer. So many awesome waves and such wild scenery. Check it out some time. It’s well worth a visit….

Most folks who know my photography, often know how much I’ve always pursued and photographed waves. Sometimes, it’s not even the waves at all that I shoot, but maybe the foam that was left behind or a random bit of water leaping over the edge of the beach. Perhaps a shell buried in the sand. Sometimes the images that I return with are nothing like I had in mind when I arrived. The past few days here on the north shore have been spectacularly beautiful. These images presented here are some of my favorites from the past few days. enjoy!

Just stopping for a moment to think about the heroes from Sept 11th, ten years ago, today. This is my photo tribute to September 11th, a photo which in fact, I captured back in 1993, some 8 years before 9/11 . I’ll never forget.
