Some more of my longer term readers are well aware of my beautiful wife, Lane. She regularly appears on this very site along with a multitude of other sites, usually surfing a big wave more often than not at Pipeline. The whole north shore community knows Lane as that hard core surf chick who’s been surfing the north shore as long as just about anyone, it seems. In fact when Lane started surfing the north shore, there were only a few girls even surfing the place. Of course it’s changed immensely over the years. Lane has been studying very, very hard this last year on a thesis that she has been doing. I honestly couldn’t tell you exactly what it’s all about because every time I’ve asked her, I get a very long answer that I can’t remember. LOL It is about ancient times I can tell you that much and it does involve a fair degree of rebelry from what I understand, so it’s probably fascinating reading. “Might be my next read in fact”
Lane graduated yesterday and from what I understand, with top honors. She sure looked pretty and content there. Her smile beaming away, I could see a look of contentment, pride, satisfaction and freedom on her face. I was proud to be there with her. It was very cool. One of her friends asked Lane what she was going to do and Lane replied SURF!

Polo on the north shore

North shore surfer; Jamie Sterling is a fully fledged big wave surf legend, but not so many people know about his other sporting passion, which is polo. Apparently Jamie has been pursuing this other interest for several years up at Dillingham ranch, located near the air-field on the west end of the north shore.
Jamie called me up, wanting me to get in touch with local polo legend Enrique. Enrique has a long main of dark hair and a distinctively south American accent to go along with it. The man can ride a horse like no other that I’ve seen.

Every sunday, they gather to give the horses a walk around the ranch and a run around the field. Close to a thousand folks roll up to watch and enjoy an afternoon in the glorious north shore sunshine. Folks, things are moving right along with my mate Welshy over in the U.K. He just picked up a new restaurant called Fire at Mawgan Porth, near Cornwall. So next time, any of you folks in the UK are over that way, stop in and have a bit of a look, maybe make them an offer on one of the canvas wraps. In the meantime, Welshy is building a new shop nearby which will be the new Sean Davey Gallery in UK. It will feature my Canvas gallery wraps, all manner of photo prints and enlargements, even a killer surf Tees, featuring my photography. I’ll give more details as that comes into fruition.

It’s been lively round here

It really has been such a poor season overall for good surf that it was a rather pleasant surprise to see some reasonably big surf here over the past couple of days. There was a relatively small number crew out and amongst large conditions all along the north shore, 2 nights ago. The swell rose almost a foot, every set there between 3 and 4pm. It went from 2-4 feet to 8-12 feet at Rockies with horrible closeouts right across the whole lineup, so I headed down to Pipe, expecting to see some wipeouts and other associated mayhem. I say mayhem because there is already quite a large build up of the beach, due to little swell, so the
backwash was really doing it;s thing, throwing mainly boogers and bodysurfers around like some weird fun park ride.
The following morning started off significantly large but the swell dropped out of it very quickly, catching the late risers completely off guard and they had to make do with what was left of the dwindling conditions.
With the trade-winds back in full effect there was a healthy crew of extraordinarily talented surfers on hand at Rocky point this morning with many of them taking to the air, aided by the lift of the trades. It looked like there was another new swell filling in this evening as well. Gotta take it while we can when it’s this late in the season folks….

The 10 best Hawaiian sea turtle pictures that I have taken.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to look back on some of the coolest under water photographs that I’ve taken of Hawaiian sea turtles over the past several years. I’ve encountered them in all kinds of interesting locations. Often, they like to hang around the rocks because it helps to give them camoflage from predators, but then there are times where I’ll encounter them completely out in the open over sandy areas too.
Sometimes one will pop it’s head up right after I’ve swum under a 6 foot wave at Pipeline. I’ve even encountered them in underwater sea caves. They are always very gentle beings, never displaying any hint of aggression. They are totally adorable creatures. These images here represent probably what are my 10 best images of Hawaiian Sea turtles. Enjoy!

In celebration of Hawaii’s beautiful blue ocean

I was just looking through my images for a specific image of a wave in clear water and was just struck by the how consistently clean our ocean water here and in in most cases clearer than what you would find in most swimming pools. Take these half a dozen images that I have selected completely randomly in that I didn’t even search for images as such, I simply chose a half dozen clear blue images from the first page of pictures that showed on my computer screen. Australian Coastal Panoramas

I just returned from a month long photo-expedition to the southern and eastern areas of Australia.

First up, I flew into Hobart, Tasmania and photographed the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, along with the ever amazing Coles Bay, on the east coast.
Following Tasmania, I captured the beautiful natural forests of the Yarra Ranges, to the east of Melbourne, along with many of Melbourne’s iconic beach Wharfs.
A half hour flight over to King Island and I was photographing Narracoopa Jetty, as well as both Currie and Cape Wickham lighthouses. Ten days in Sydney thus followed, taking in legendary beaches as Bondi, Bronte and Coogee beaches near the city, followed the likes of Avalon, Whale, Mona Vale and Narrabeen beaches up on the northern beaches of Sydney. This all equalled a month on the road and it sure was nice to finally arrive back in Hawaii and drive back down
Kam Highway to the north shore. I seem to love the place just a little more, each time, I return…

I’ve been looking a lot further afield than my normal shooting locatons, looking for fresh new locations to shoot and I’ve been finding a couple lately. Take this morning for example. I got up in the dark, grabbed a cup o’ coffee and headed down the coast. The place that I was hoping to shoot wasn’t really doing it for me and purely as a last minute afterthought, I took a turn that led me to a beach that I’d never been before. And it was such a beautiful beach
with lush greenery along it’s shores and the most sparkling clean and green water, I’ve seen in some time. I was really looking for a cool sunrise image first and foremost, but I saw just a twinkle of potential in the ocean waves there and so took to the water for hopefully some
inside the tube views. I wasn’t disappointed at all. It turned out to be one cool new location that is certain to be revisited again and soon. Enjoy…..

The past couple of weeks has been a pretty beautiful time here on the north shore and I’ve been shooting a lot of really cool beach pictures and
coastal images.

The Great Ocean Road was better than great.

I just returned from a 10 day photo trip to Victoria and Tasmania, both southern states of Australia. I managed to shoot a lot of great panoramic landscapes while I was there, despite sometimes less than favorable weather conditions. The Great Ocean Road was a great example of this. We rocked up Gibson Steps, just 1 moment before the sun departed for the remainder of the day. Luckily, it was a visually dramatic departure. The following morning however was simply astounding. Awakening in the dark, I could see the stars above, but by the time sunrise came, it had clouded back over. That was a bummer, because I was hoping for at least a glimpse of the sun. I could see that any chance of a sunrise was not going to happen at Gibson Steps, itself due to the odd angle that sun rises over the land at that particular location, so we went down the road to the next lookout at the 12 Apostles and as we approached the viewpoint, the rising sun burst out of the cloud in a totally gothic (god like) fashion and just for 30 seconds time period. Meanwhile, while I’m shooting this incredible scene, the winds are blowing 40-50 knots. It took every bit of skill that I could muster to make this picture happen. Of course, I nailed the picture. It turned out to be one of THE quintessential images of this trip for sure.(see the 1st image) We cruised back over to Gibson Steps and were amazed to see a guy standing there on his own in the early morning light with no vehicle nearby. It turned out that he was a tourist from Italy and had been camping on the beach below and a wave had swept into his tent. The surf by the way was huge! He was lucky to only get wet. Flashback to 2001 and Kieren Perrow at Shipsterns

It was the year 2001 and I had led a band of surfers into a very remote and difficult to access surf location, deep in the Tasmanian wilderness. The place was still largely unknown about, but things changed after Kieren Perrow, Drew Courtney and Mark Mathews paddled out there. 2 Crazy sessions ensued over the 2 days that we were there. Both were milestone sessions with
enourmous waves of consequence being photographed for the first time. Kieren in particular put on an epic performance which catapaulted him onto the world stage. Fast forward 10 and a bit years and we see Kieren Perrow winning one of the heaviest contests around. The Pipemasters in dangerous
8-15 foot surf.

A birds eye view of the famed reef at Pipeline

Ever wondered what the reef looks like that it causes the water to propel itself upwards and outward, forming the world famous surf break that we all know as Pipeline? Wonder no more. Here in this
ariel perspective, the business end of the surf reef is clearly visible in the middle of the first frame. The reef sits at a slight angle, producing world class barrels, often in the 2 figure range. So take a good look at the reef there in image one, then check out the surfer in image 2, also called Reef (McIntosh), standing inside an absolutely perfect wave. This is THE reason that so many people want to surf pipeline. Enjoy…

The long wait

It is now November the 18th which is well and truly inside of the normal window for big surf in Hawaii.
Typically at this time of the year, you’d be looking at 10 feet plus of raw ocean swell, but this year, it has struggled so far to get beyond a couple of feet. The Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa beach park has been on hold since day one and may not even run with the way things are heading. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of out-of-towners all here right now for the surf contest season and most of them have not even managed to get a decent surf in yet. Word is peeps are getting stir crazy along the north shore, with no waves on offer. Parties must be going into overdrive every night for sure. Worse still is that the experts see no signs of improvement in the near future. Kind of makes me stoked to be leaving for Oz

soon.

Friends, I have just released a new DVD featuring hundreds of my best images of
Ocean waves or as I like to call them ocean wave sculptures

Way back in 1977, I squeezed off my first photograph which in itself was an ocean wave. Since then, I’ve photographed perhaps hundreds’s of thousands of images, but I’ve always continued to photograph the ocean waves. I’ve had numerous people ask me over the years to produce a DVD of my images and after someone again asked me recently, I decided to go for it. This DVD features 4 music tracks by Australian musician; Red Whyte played against a never ending array of amazing wave images from all over the world.
