Folks, I spotted this cool boat on the beach at Waimea Bay, a few days ago and I made a mental note to return at Sunset and shoot a few frames. I’m so glad that I did because the sky became all dramatic with an influx of clouds, right around the same time. I walked away with probably 4 or 5 folio images, so I was pretty stoked with that. I drove past Waimea again just yesterday and the boat was gone again. I felt so lucky that I had seized that moment to get those pictures. Sometimes, you have to strike while the iron is hot. :)

High and Dry

I was out early this morning checking out what visuals, the ocean had on offer. It turned out to be a less than average outing with really just a couple of decent frames shot. But as it turned out, these were real winners. With surf publishing taking a massive dive over the past year, I’ve been shooting a lot more coastal imagery in my spare moments. I squeezed off just two frames of this cool starfish, perched right where the waves
were lapping the shoreline. A perfect image to add to my ever expanding coastal collections.

I went for a bit of a swim at Waimea this morning, to scope it out. Usually round this time of year, the place is teeming with massive shoals of
bait-fish, numbering in their tens of thousands if not more. Today however, it was pretty clear that this won’t happen for probably another month or even two. Even the turtles were sparse this morning. I only spotted the one where as I’d normally see them every few minutes. As you can see from the images though, it was still a great swim.

Folks, I just got hold of a copy of this issue of NZ Adventure magazine, from New Zealand. I guess it’s not exactly recent, but I never saw this one till now. I think my wife had picked up the post quite some time ago and this one had been living in her car for a while. As many of you know, I’ve had well over a hundred magazine covers in my career and this is the latest one that I’m aware of. There’s also a ton of my imagery inside this issue as well, but I’ll save that for a later post.

I was over at the house of legendary north shore surfboard shaper; Jeff Bushman
today specifically to shoot some pictures of an iconic surfboard indeed. The Bushman shaped gun which Ross Clarke Jones rode to victory in the 2001 Eddie Aikau big wave surfing invitational. An amazing looking piece of big wave equipment up close, Jeff explained that the board had a unique thruster fin in it which helped with holding the fin in the water, in the big waves. Amazingly too, the board is in exceptionally good condition. I can tell it hasn’t done too many battles. “Bushie” told me today that he’s seeking to part with the board for the right amount of money, so for all you serious surfboardcollectors out there, this is a truly unique opportunity. folks, I love these little guys. I’ve only had occasion to run into them just a few times over the years. You don’t see them too often here on the north shore, but at certain times of the year they can return sometimes on a daily basis. This particular day, there were dozens and dozens of these dolphins just cruising around and generally having a great social time. They are beautiful creatures to witness up close like this. I highly recommend that you get in the water and take a look, if you ever get the chance. It may well change your life. :)

Another image randomly chosen from my surf archives, this is from December the 7th, last year. Waimeawas the biggest, I’ve seen people surf it. Soon after this image, the sun went down right as a new more solid push of the swell
occurred, resulting in what was said to be a dozen or so rescues. It was crazy this particular afternoon. They ran the Eddie the very next day.

Folks, you ever wondered what the reef might look like at such extraordinary big wave locations such as Pipeline or Waimea. I’ve been fortunate enough to fly over the north shore a couple of times when there was little in the way of surf. As a result, the reef’s become very clear to the eye, from above. Take these 2 pictures of Pipeline and Waimea. Both quite clearly show massive slabs of reef, right where the wave zone is during big surf. So now, you know… :D

Folks, One of Hawaii’s most beautiful waterfalls is located on the east side of Oahu, but has been off limits to the public for the past decade, since a rockslide tragedy killed some folks. Pretty much the only legal way to see the falls these days is on a helicopter charter. This one, I did with my buddy Josh, over at Paradise Helicopters. Give Josh a call and he’ll show you a good time.

The surf season here on the north shore doesn’t really properly get underway again for a few more weeks yet but there’s a lot more to this place when that just surf anyway. enjoy

Folks, Marc Hand from Hobart in Tasmania recently purchased a fine art print from me.
The picture was a capture of a perfect 6 foot swell on the fabled Hobart point breaks, back in 2006. At the time, it was claimed to be the best point swell in 15 years. I just happened to be visiting at the time and as able to walk away with a dream stash of perfect surfing lineups. Images that I had dreamed of for years of being able to shoot again if I ever moved back to Hobart. Never did I imagine that I would actually stumble upon such a perfect point swell while I was merely visiting. The Hobart points are very, very fickle and only break a few times a year and as mentioned already, very rarely at this quality. Marc tells me that his new picture is a real stoker. He can go to the beach and surf on shore 1 foot junk, but the moment he gets back home and walks in that door, there’s the picture staring at him, reminding him of what it’s all about. Marc Hand from Hobart Tasmania chose this cool Tasmanian print

It’s round this time of the year ( August ) that the seasons start to change and we see hints of the coming north shore swell season. This image which I entitled Towards the light was taken during a small mid year bump of swell at Rocky lefts. As you can see the sun is rising way down over Sunset Beach. In the middle of the surf season, that sun is coming up way more to the west up near Off The Wall. It’s a big difference in how it looks.
Here’s an interesting fact; Our last north shore season started earlier than normal last year in August and it didn’t really stop till late June-mid July this year, so that was a very long season indeed. The longest one that I can recall for the north shore. This is my friend Zola Bruso
