Huge perfect Waimea for every man – Jan 11th 2010

The Eddie Aikau big wave surfing contest has a commanding presence over Waimea Bay. Each year, surf season comes around and whenever there’s a sniff of a Waimea swell, there are hoards of sponsored big wave surfers all over it. This year was no different leading up to the Eddie, with quite possibly the most big name big wave surfers, I’ve ever seen in the lineup at one time, just before the Eddie ran on Dec 9th, last year. Fast forward to yesterday’s huge swell and I didn’t see any of these guys out there. They’ve all moved on to Jaws, or Mavericks perhaps Cortez Bank or Todos.
Finally, many of the lesser known Waimea surfers have had the break served up to them in fine form and for the complete taking. They didn’t disappoint either. It’s almost like you knew that the surfers knew what a special opportunity this was and they were making the most of every wave that came their way.
Sometime, round midday, a monster set came through and completely took out the entire lineup, leaving a trail of twisted and snapped big wave guns. Apparently, several of the surfers were rescued as well. Frankly, it was real lucky that no one got hurt or killed, as this all went down right on the take off zone. The place continued to pump all day long ending with a serving of meaty sets right before the sun set. Good stuff!
