Folks, I spotted this cool boat on the beach at Waimea Bay, a few days ago and I made a mental note to return at Sunset and shoot a few frames. I’m so glad that I did because the sky became all dramatic with an influx of clouds, right around the same time. I walked away with probably 4 or 5 folio images, so I was pretty stoked with that. I drove past Waimea again just yesterday and the boat was gone again. I felt so lucky that I had seized that moment to get those pictures. Sometimes, you have to strike while the iron is hot. :)

High and Dry

I was out early this morning checking out what visuals, the ocean had on offer. It turned out to be a less than average outing with really just a couple of decent frames shot. But as it turned out, these were real winners. With surf publishing taking a massive dive over the past year, I’ve been shooting a lot more coastal imagery in my spare moments. I squeezed off just two frames of this cool starfish, perched right where the waves
were lapping the shoreline. A perfect image to add to my ever expanding coastal collections.

I went for a bit of a swim at Waimea this morning, to scope it out. Usually round this time of year, the place is teeming with massive shoals of
bait-fish, numbering in their tens of thousands if not more. Today however, it was pretty clear that this won’t happen for probably another month or even two. Even the turtles were sparse this morning. I only spotted the one where as I’d normally see them every few minutes. As you can see from the images though, it was still a great swim.

folks, I love these little guys. I’ve only had occasion to run into them just a few times over the years. You don’t see them too often here on the north shore, but at certain times of the year they can return sometimes on a daily basis. This particular day, there were dozens and dozens of these dolphins just cruising around and generally having a great social time. They are beautiful creatures to witness up close like this. I highly recommend that you get in the water and take a look, if you ever get the chance. It may well change your life. :)

Folks, you ever wondered what the reef might look like at such extraordinary big wave locations such as Pipeline or Waimea. I’ve been fortunate enough to fly over the north shore a couple of times when there was little in the way of surf. As a result, the reef’s become very clear to the eye, from above. Take these 2 pictures of Pipeline and Waimea. Both quite clearly show massive slabs of reef, right where the wave zone is during big surf. So now, you know… :D

A lot of folks visit the islands to see the huge surf during our winter months, but just as many people visit the north shore to see what else is out here, during the summer months in particular. Just about anywhere along the north shore, you can throw on a snorkel and mask and be swimming with beautiful Hawaii’an sea turtles. Take my advice and avoid the obvious tourist spots. Just find yourself somewhere mellow and go for it. The turtles are pretty much everywhere and will often swim quite close to you.

A familiar site with anyone who cruises around Haleiwa in the late afternoons, here on the north shore are the outriggers . Prety much most afternoons, they are there doing their thing with the sun setting in the background. Photographing it was a bit like the proverbial saying “shooting ducks in a barrel” Too easy.

It gets pretty busy up here on the north shore, but right now at this time of the year, it is soooooo mellow. Take this scene for example. It’s like about 8.30 in the morning and it’s deserted. The rainbows’s don’t stop though. They can be seen doing their thing 24-7 in the islands, well during daylight hours anyway…

We are flashing back to around this time, ten years ago ago and kam Highwaywas blocked by a rockslide for months. Eventually they needed to do something, so they built a road right across Waimea Beach. It was something else…

I love finding pictures in all shapes, colors, tones and contrasts. This one seems to have captured a little bit of everything. The old rusting pick up truck with the surfboards hanging out the back, backdropped by a brilliant red twilight sky at Haleiwa beach park, on the north shore. Just perfect.

Just about all of you know about the Chilian earthquakewhich occured last night and the resulting tsunami threat which had
all of Hawaii on full alert till well into the afternoon. I started the day out being woken by about a dozen tourists packing all their stuff into their cars out in the parking lot from 2.00 – 5.00am yeah, took ‘em 3 hours to finally piss off. Following that was the
air raid sirens every hour, starting at 6am. We made our way down to the gas station at Sunset beach only to find that they’d closed it right on down. Then back on the road down to Foodland where they were letting people in, but only so many at a time. That only lasted an hour before they shut it down. The most popular items that filtered out of there were bottled water and toilet paper. We got a bunch of both ourselves. The other things that were moving out the door at a pretty brisk pace were large bags of ice and beer.
I spoke to my neighbor Josh
who pilots the helicopter out of Turtle Bay
and he told me that he was probably taking it up to avoid any possible damage from tsnunami’s and he invited me to join him. It was my intention to fly over Rocky Point on the north shore
and document the difference between the surge and the wave, over some of these reefs. So we continued to watch the progress in Hilo and it just didn’t really pan out in the end. So, it was all a bit of a no-show, but really, we are all very thankful too.

Here are some glimpses from my day here on the north shore….

This was the very first ever picture that I made of a turtle. I was swimming at Pipeline one day and noticed this turtle cruising by and so I dove down and squeezed off just one fabulous frame of fujichrome Velvia. This is still one of my favorite Turtle images, despite that fact that I have produced many, many more over the years. Pipe Turtle

As many of you know, it’s been an amazing season here for really big surf. One of my favourite images from the recent big swell episodes was one such image that I captured late in the day before the Eddie ran. This picture of several surfers just scraping over a huge set wave at Waimea just seemed to so well capture the absurd danger of the situation at the time. Shortly after this image was captured, several of these surfers had to be rescued, when things got a bit out of hand.
This image also happens to be the very same image that I’m currently promoting, in response to the call out for donations for the friends of kehau Sullivan fund.

Wow, what a crazy few weeks, it’s been here on the north shore lately. There’s been so much going on round the place. Finally Christmas came around we got the north shore back all-be-it for a week or little more. So quiet round here at the moment, even with a Waimea swell happening today too. Most out of town surfers have left already, but there will be more waves of surfers here before you know it. The season’s only half way through right now. Lot’s more come yet…
