Aqua Dome

When I’m out photographing in the morning, I’m usually first and foremost looking for pockets of extraordinary light. That and a cool background of some kind. So I was a bit surprised when I wandered onto this scene one morning. The waves were sweeping up the beach and running straight into this rock, resulting in a spectacular fan of water momentarily “doming” around this steady rock. Not only is this image visually spectacular, but it also brings to mind some quotes like, “Solid as a rock” or “ Immovable object,” to mention a couple.

One person actually contacted me because he wanted to use the picture for his late father’s remembrance service because his father was the rock of their family.

It’s good to remember to keep an eye for the unusual. It totally fits with my motto to “Shoot Different.” So many of my best photographs come to me this way, serendipitously. More often, it’s simply about just being there in the first place.
